Pain wrenched Forrest from sleep. His first thought had been that he was in the dungeon of his youth, beaten by the guards for dancing in his underwear during dinner to get attention. He soon learned attempts to be seen were not worth the pain and never did it again. But this wasn’t that. This was a sharp and present danger. He came to his senses in the hazy gloom of his cold concrete room in the Tower. Two men in uniform were kicking the living shit out of him on the floor.

These soldiers were dressed like the ones who’d brought him in on the first day. Like the uniform the Captain wore. Military. Had the Captain remembered their altercation in the garden? Was Melody safe?

A boot to the gut had him gasping, and he almost struck out to take his enemy down with swift vengeance, but a voice slid through the gloom and made him pause.

“Not his face,” the Captain said.

The two thugs punched and pummeled Forrest as he hunched into himself. He held back, bit his tongue, and took the beating. If the Captain didn’t want Forrest’s face bruised, he didn’t want him dead. He just wanted to teach Forrest a lesson. This was one of those times he had to appear human. Weak. He had to let events correct themselves because if he came out on top again this time, and Melody couldn’t wipe the Captain’s memory, then Forrest was dead.

He felt like the hits went on for hours. He hated having to hold his punches and take the pain. But soon enough, they stopped. Footsteps receded. A heavy set drew close. The air shifted as the Captain leaned down and whispered in Forrest’s ear, “That’s payback for humiliating me in front of Ms. Melody. Now every time you wince in pain while I’m away, you’ll remember she’s mine, not yours. Don’t even think about giving her your belt, or next time—” He nudged his boot into Forrest’s crotch. “I’ll make sure you won’t need one.”

When he was gone, Forrest attempted to roll onto his back. His injuries stabbed like knives. It took him until the sun set and the knowledge that he was late to pick up Melody for her performance before he forced himself off the floor. He stumbled to the bathroom, covered up the black and blue body, and then pissed blood into the latrine.

He decided right then and there that he would kill that man one day.

He would get all three females out of there—maybe the band—but then he would come back and stab the Captain between the eyes. Slowly.
